Spotlight Solution of the Month

Smoke Stack Sampler with a multi-axis servo-controlled positioning system

Last August RG Group completed one of the most uniquely engineered mechanical assemblies we have done in a while. A company came to us needing to find a way to measure air velocity inside of a huge pipe. The primary function of this was to measure a pipe system coming from a smoke stack with a 4 foot pipe elbow in it. They need to measure the effects and change of that air velocity profile from the elbow out to the suction fan. They laid out the basic design and described  some of the problems they were facing and wanted us to work with their vision to fill in the missing gaps. They provided our engineers with a drawing that looked with something like a pipe and a stick coming in and out of it. It was not very detailed at all but they knew exactly what they needed as the end result and that made working with them and designing this Smoke Stack Sampler much easier.

There are very few stock products on this construction apart from the basic nuts and bolts, a few fasteners and an electrical enclosure. Everything else was uniquely designed and created for this specific project. Most of the metal parts are custom fabricated aluminum and steel, bent brackets and welded assemblies that our engineer solutions team really enjoyed creating. Originally, when we were finishing up the product they told us they didn’t want to bother painting it at all but our team knew if we didn’t put a finish coat on it the metal would corrode within a year and they would need to either fix the Smoke Stack Sampler or buy a new one. We worked through the details with them and they agreed to a snappy royal blue paint job.

The biggest point of interest for RG Group as a company is the relationship we built with the customer. This was a project that spanned several months, if not years, from inception until final completion... so interactive customer support was the key throughout the project. Knowing that our customers trusted us and wanted to collaborate with us throughout the design, manufacturing and installation process made communication easy, we knew exactly what they wanted and how they wanted it. We were constantly on the phone with the customer, working in a collaborative effort to make sure we were delivering exactly what they expected. Our goal is to always leave a positive impression on our customers. We know how serious the work that they do is and how important the research they gather using the system is going to be, so it's our job to make sure that system preforms at top quality.

Our Case Study

RG Group has created solutions for businesses in a wide range of markets including Entertainment, Military and Defense, Industrial Machinery, Mining and Extraction, Marine and many more. Our engineers take the ideas and simple drawings given to them and create unique products that fit exactly what our clients are asking for. Here you can read through some of our case studies and see just how we progressed from a simple idea to designing and building a fully functional engineered solution. Our case studies span projects from the design and build of a custom hydraulic system  for a large motion simulator for a hit television show to the design and build of a central hydraulic system for steering control on high-performance yachts for a premier custom yacht manufacturer.
